I ask for five things to be part of my life: clarity, connection to others, creativity, grace, and abundance.

The Real Work

It may be that when we no longer know what to do we have come to our real work.
and that when we no longer know which way to go
we have come to our real journey.
The mind that is not baffled is not employed.
The impeded stream is the one that sings.

The Peace of Wild Things

When despair for the world grows in me
and I wake in the night at the least sound
in fear of what my life and my children's lives may be,
I go and lie down where the wood drake
rests in his beauty on the water, and the great heron feeds.
I come into the peace of wild things
who do not tax their lives with forethought
of grief. I come into the presence of still water.
And I feel above me the day-blind stars
waiting with their light. For a time
I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Enjoying one’s work requires fair treatment, a worthwhile goal, trust in your ability to get the job done, and an appropriate degree of challenge: the opportunity to be all that you can be.

What I've learned with life thus far is that it's great to have dreams and an idea of how they'll turn out but it's more important to have action and let go of controlling the outcome entirely. By just taking steps - any steps - other things pop up. New roads, new people, new ideas. Sometimes they're better than what one could imagine, sometimes not. But to give into things happening is sometimes the way to go. Just as long as one isn't sitting on their ass waiting to be saved.

"The two most radical questions you can ask about work are:
1.)What joy results in the work we are doing -- what are we manufacturing and bringing to the world and how can we up the ante on that joy?
2.) What suffering is relieved because of the work we are doing? How are you going to relieve suffering if you don't have something in your life that is bigger than suffering, i.e., joy?"
-- Matthew Fox, quoted in the Premiere issue of Worthwhile magazine

"Whatever you're going to do, the first thing you have to ask yourself is, `Do I want this?' That's a basic question that a lot of people don't even ask. Where we've succeeded is where we've been the first customer. As long as we're the first customer, we've got a good start."
-- Mel Ziegler, co-founder of Banana Republic, interviewed in the March issue of Worthwhile magazine

"Ain't no sense worrying about things you got control over, `cause if you got control over them, ain't no sense worrying. And there ain't no sense worrying about thing you got no control over, 'cause if you got no control over them, ain't no sense worrying."
-- Former baseball great Mickey Rivers, quoted in Instinct by Thomas L. Harrison

The feeling of being hurried is not usually the result of living a full life and having no time. It is on the contrary born of a vague fear that we are wasting our life. When we do not do the one thing we ought to do, we have no time for anything else- we are the busiest people in the world. - Eric Hoffer

What I point out to you is only that
You shouldn’t allow yourselves
To be confused by others.
Act when you need to,
Without further hesitation or doubt.
People today can’t do this.
What is their affliction?
Their affliction is in their
Lack of self-confidence.
If you do not spontaneously
Trust yourself sufficiently,
You will be in a frantic state,
Pursuing all sorts of objects
And being changed by those objects,
Unable to be independent.

"Space and time are not conditions in which we live; they are simply modes in which we think."

Stop seeking. You already are that which is sought. Toss books. Stay hungry. Consider as a personal challenge: "The first step to wisdom is silence. The second is listening."
